The mission of Community Harvest Food Bank is to alleviate hunger through the full use of donated food and other resources.
Community Harvest Food Bank seeks to be a dynamic, responsive, and charitable leader in the effort to alleviate hunger and its causes in our service area.
Community Harvest Food Bank was established in 1983 as a response to the closure of the International Harvester plant that sent tens of thousands into unemployment. Social service agencies, churches, and faith-based organizations were overwhelmed with requests for assistance and people were finding it difficult to feed their families. During the first year of operation, Community Harvest distributed 200,000 pounds of food to the hungry. In 1984, the food bank became incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Today, we are the regional food bank for northeast Indiana, serving the counties of Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells, and Whitley.
After more than 36 years of operation, Community Harvest has grown to become a nationally recognized regional food bank within the Feeding America network. We distribute 13.8 million pounds of food annually to an average of more than 84,000 unique people throughout the nine-county northeast Indiana region. Nearly 400 member soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food pantries, and youth programs depend on us for over 70% of their food supply. In addition, we offer several in-house programs including Kids BackPack, TeenPak, Crisis Assistance food program, Hope for Heroes, SeniorPak, Farm Wagon mobile pantry, Community Cupboard pantry, Kids’ Café, and Saturday Helping Hands distribution.
In August 2015, Community Harvest became the first regional food bank in the United States to open a blanch, chill, and freeze produce preservation facility. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Produce Preservation Center allows us to preserve the bountiful harvest to distribute to hungry families year round. While the heart of our mission is to alleviate hunger, we also strive to provide nourishment and increase overall health and quality of life.
We are also proud to have obtained the highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator, a national organization that rates charities. They place high importance on nonprofit organizations with responsible financial practices and transparent reporting. We are also fortunate to have the help of thousands of volunteers who support our mission to alleviate hunger. In addition, we maintain an A+ rating at the Better Business Bureau, and we have received GuideStar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency.
